It's Been Almost a Week...
A few points of note:
Work is hectic.
NEW APARTMENT!
Stone Roses are phenomenal.
Stone Roses station on Pandora is a perfect anecdote to hectic work days.
Busted out the heavy winter coat for the first time this year.
I always want pizza.
Villa signed Darren Bent and Jean Makoun.
Hopefully they'll get Kyle Walker on a permanent.

We Only Get What We Will Settle For...
Seriously one of my favorite songs right now. The acoustic version is great because it hammers on with a bit more sincerity than the thrashy/faster original. I like the Oasis version; Liam's sneer adds a bit of angst to the lyrics, but there's a lot being said in this song and it makes me so stoked.

Fire Play Burnt, etc.
Just saw this via TPM.
It seems evident that when you mobilize demographics using a rhetoric of war, use the language of "terrorism" to undermine your political opponents, those that become "energized" to take action do so through violence. This guy's situation seems a bit more unique, in that he was upset over a personal issue, but come on--we need to realize that the way that we talk about things encourages others to react using the same language.
It's no stretch of the imagination. Language has powerful, far-reaching impacts, and frames the way in which people view and interpret their surroundings. It's devastating to see that the mainstream media toys with those impacts rather than mitigating the words that encourage others to act violent.
Tragic. Once again.

I just wanted to take the opportunity to say that the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords is incredibly tragic.
Regardless of political affiliation or voting record, it surprises me that conservatives in our country are being adamant about being guiltless, rather than offering support as fellow human beings. It always seems suspicious when someone's first reaction is: "It wasn't my fault."
I really hope churches don't picket the funerals of innocent bystanders who were shot and killed by a lunatic.
There's been so much violence to kickstart 2011. Here's a nod to hoping that some peace is instilled throughout the year.

Such a Wimp
I'm such a wimp, but it's so, so chilly outside. It's 25 degrees as I type this, which all things considered, isn't that bad, but it's enough to make me not want to do anything.
Last night I had the pleasure of going to a few different places around the city for some snacks and drinks. Went to this place called the Rocking Horse and had great beer and a hummus plate that was really really good.
The sign looked neat.

Showing Incredible Restraint...
Hi friends:
One last post before I retreat from the blog and try and get some work done.
I've been refraining from commenting on the dire situation at my beloved Aston Villa Football Club this season, but I'm holding out until Saturday before taking the gloves off. I had the unfortunate privilege of watching bits of the Sunderland match, and I was terribly, terribly disappointed with how they played.
Are we that desperate that Dunne was playing up top and people were just hoofing the ball to anyone big? I got worried when I saw Collins attacking the net a few weeks ago, because as a CB, one would think they'd have the discipline and form to thread some controlled passes through a midfield onto the wings and have a forward motivated enough to hit the crossbar. If only someone like Stuart Downing could have out-muscled and out-hustled the Sunderland defense to put a sitter out there for Emile Heskey to tap in...Oh. Right.

I loved the story that Pete Sessions tried to jump-start his new-found position in Congress without being officially sworn in.
It's a silly thing, I suppose, being that the votes had already counted...but FFS, try to at least abide by the procedure and ritual in place that make this government appear to be somewhat functional. Amirite?

The last road into the Australian city of Rockhampton was tonight cut off by water as Queensland's premier, Anna Bligh, warned that the floods which have overwhelmed the state may not recede for weeks.
"It looks like Rockhampton's in the middle of an inland sea. The amount of water coming down these river systems is nothing short of astonishing," said Bligh on a visit to the city. "Given the scale and size of this disaster, and the prospect that we will see water sitting potentially for a couple of weeks, we will have major issues to deal with throughout January."
Rockhampton, which has 75,000 people, will be supplied by military helicopters and by barge. Fourteen tonnes of food and medical supplies were taken in today by road before the highway was cut off.
The flooding has hit an area the size of France and Germany, affecting 200,000 people in more than 20 towns and cities.
